Ecdysis

OVERVIEW

I was brought on by local artist Nick Guilford to design the brochure for his debut exhibition, Ecdysis — a project that would eventually expand well beyond its original brief.

About

Pronounced "Ec-dye-sis"

This exhibition speaks to feelings of futility, hysteria, and alienation prevalent among New Zealand's youth. Ecdysis pushes back on the idea that these feelings are personal failings, pointing instead to the bigger forces at play: meritocracy, neoliberalism, and a media landscape that's steadily eroding.

What started as a print project grew into something much bigger — expanding into wayfinding, audience interaction, and a full graphic system, with additional collaborators joining to bring it all to life.

Three weeks before the opening, Nick asked me for a booklet design to map his upcoming exhibition, Ecdysis. The goal was to find a way to encourage visitors to have unique experiences with the artworks and the space, rather than direct them on what to think or feel.

The booklets were made with ECO100 stock with 4 pages of tracing paper that interactively revealed information when turned. I also designed vinyl stickers, 2.6m tall banners, event signage, stickers and a merchant system.

Of course, massive team effort to get this thing going.
Huge thanks to Gilbert May | Point at General Edition Studio with the print/binding assist. And to Nick Guilford, Daniel van Lith, Josef van Plateringen, Ryan Dombroski, Jacob Burnett, Georgia Ryan & Mick Abbott.
